The other day I made a post on A Timeline For The Universe by Omid Kashan which has been featured on the website Information Is Beautiful.
Patterns can be captured and processed through software to create artwork, and in this digital age, the possibilities are endless.
For his graduation project from The Royal Academy Of The Arts (Den Haag), Frederic Brodbeck has focused on visualizing and comparing movie data in his Cinemetrics project. By focusing on one aspect of the film, (such as movement) the program can generate an overall fingerprint of the film in its entirety, as you can see below.

In the video, Brodbeck compares many different films so that you can see the varying degrees of movement in films such as The Shining and Alien.

I always find it interesting to see how other artists interpret scientific data. For example, I recently wrote an entry on Omid Kashan who designed a timeline for the universe, which was then featured on the Information Is Beautiful website.
The work of Luke Jerram is similarly exciting. Jerram has analysed the seismograph from the recent earthquake in Japan and has represented the graph 3-dimensionally.The sculpture was made by designing the sculpture on a 3-D rapid prototyping machine.
Jerram has recently been involved with virologists at the University Of Bristol, which led to the design of glass microbiology sculptures.
These glass sculptures will be exhibited at GV Art in London from the 2nd of December 2011 until the 18th of February 2012. Click here to download a PDF of the event.

This "Last Clock" application records 60 seconds of video information and warps it in to a circular pattern.

As someone who is interested in alternative photography processes, the use of a clock is very interesting. I love the idea of representing the passage of time in one image.

Omid Kashan's "Timeline Of The Universe" has been featured on Information Is Beautiful which is a website run by David McCandless. David McCandless is a data journalist and information designer who is passionate about visualizing information.
It is easy to see why Omid Kashan's design appeals to David McCandless, as creating a "timeline for the universe" is an ambitious task, yet executed beautifully. The finished design is sleek, the circular design helps to simplify the information, whilst the colour palette evokes a night sky.
The concept of visualizing data is an interesting one, data in its raw format can be terribly boring. For example, Omid Kashan used a Wikipedia page to construct his timeline. However, the Information Is Beautiful website shows that data doesn't have to look dull. The algorithms constructed by data can be processed in a creative way, making new patterns and designs that would be hard to devise from imagination alone.
This type of data presentation is already being used successfully as a type of interactive exhibit at The Wellcome Collection. In July 2011, I visited The Wellcome Collection and was able to see my biometric identity in the shape of a star!
